Mastering Personal Branding in Seconds

Your attention span is shorter than that of a goldfish.

That’s a sad stat and unfortunately a reality in our increasingly distracted world.

We are so overwhelmed with social media, emails, text messages and task switching that the window to make a lasting impression is incredibly brief – we're talking less than 7 seconds. (I’ve actually heard it’s closer to just 3 but I don’t have any data to back that up).

Capturing someone’s attention (in a good way) is critical. It’s time to be more intention…and it starts with your personal brand.

Years ago, I met a wedding planner at a trade show and very shortly after meeting her I thought "I'd never hire this person to plan my wedding". (Don't worry I didn't say this out loud!)

But it did make me pause...why did I just think that?

It didn't take me long to realize why. She was dressed frumpily, her nail polish was chipped and her hair and makeup were poorly done. Which made me think – if she can't even pull herself together to represent her brand at a trade show, how would she be able to plan, organize and execute my wedding? Yikes!

So basically, her personal brand (or lack thereof) was affecting her business. She didn't realize that her appearance affected people's perception of her ability to do the job.

Now don't get me wrong, I'm not talking about how pretty or handsome you are or how thin or fit you are. I'm talking about how well put together you are.

This experience was a stark reminder of how crucial our personal presentation is in the business world. It's not superficial; it’s a reflection of our values.

The power of perception is undeniable.

As a founder, your personal brand is an extension of your business brand. So, it's essential that every aspect of your appearance - from your clothes to your hairstyle - aligns with and amplifies your brand. And guys, this applies to you as well!

Personal branding goes beyond your style and the clothes you wear, it's about your body language and the energy you exude? Is it positive? Does it make people want to work with you?

I often hear, “Wow, you are your brand!” This is intentional. My personal brand is meticulously aligned with my business, ensuring that every interaction reflects my values and personality. This might sound like a lot of work, but the reality is, when your personal brand and style is aligned with you – it’s easy to live it.

I’ve embraced my own unique style – a signature colour a client of mine calls, ‘Laura Pink,’ and my natural curls – elements that have become synonymous with my personal and business brand.

These features make me instantly recognizable and memorable (even if you scroll on by my post – you know it’s me).

For my fellow founders, consider this: in a world where decisions are made in the blink of an eye, your personal brand is a crucial facet of your business strategy, especially when considering a future sale or transition. The way you present yourself can significantly influence your brand’s perception and, by extension, its success.

So, ask yourself: When you meet someone, do you leave a lasting, positive impression within those critical seconds? How do you ensure your personal brand is not just seen but remembered?
