That’s all the time you have to make an impression.
Are you making a good one?
Years ago I met a wedding planner at a trade show and very shortly after meeting her I thought “I’d never hire this person to plan my wedding”. (Don’t worry I didn’t say this out loud!)
But it did make me pause…why did I just think that?
It didn’t take me long to realize why. She was dressed frumpy, her nail polish was chipped and her hair and makeup were poorly done. Which made me think – if she can’t even pull herself together to represent her brand at a trade show, why would she be able to plan, organize and execute my wedding? Yikes!
So basically her physical appearance was affecting her ability to get business. She didn’t realize that the way she dressed affected people’s perception of her ability to do the job.
Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not talking about how pretty or handsome you are or how thin or fit you are. I’m talking about how well put together you are.
That doesn’t mean you have to spend a fortune on your wardrobe, some of my favourite outfits are from Joe Fresh and were not expensive. I definitely have some things I’ve splurged on, but honestly it doesn’t matter the cost. It matters that your clothes, hair, makeup, nails, shoes, etc. look good, are professional and brand appropriate. And guys, this applies to you as well!
It’s not just about the clothes you wear, it’s about your smile and your body language. What kind of energy do you exude? Is it positive? Does it make people want to work with you?
Don’t underestimate the power of perception.
People are always saying to me “wow, you are your brand!” That’s because I am my brand and my brand is me. And I know when I’m out in the world, that I am representing my brand.
Be who you are, dress your best and speak with passion… people will flock to you and your energy.
So when you meet people, are you memorable in a good way? I’d love to hear your thoughts so please comment below!
